In the foothills

This is my backyard a couple days ago, on a misty afternoon. I live in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in Washington state, and often the bowl of the valley below my house fills with mist early and late. I’m on the edge of a wilderness, and my backyard looks like it!

I feel incredibly lucky to live here. I have a fair number of human neighbors whom I seldom see, as well as bear, deer, coyote, and bobcat neighbors whom I see more often. Then there are my cougar neighbors who make sure never to be seen. I often hear owls (barn and screech and occasionally a great horned), so even though I don’t often see them, I know they’re out there. I believe a big owl may have gotten one of my cats when I had outdoor cats. My current Potato and Onion are strictly indoor cats.
